Accelerometers

Where do you go after the speed equation?  We made accelerometers to demonstrate that acceleration is a change in speed or direction.  Most folks know about the speed part, but the direction is equally as important, and often not thought of as acceleration.  We made some quick basic examples of accelerometers and Mr. Finn reviewed speed, forces and introduced the new concept, as they worked on their models.  Then he demonstrated.

It was cool to see the acceleration and deceleration as he walked around, turned, and stopped.  The card had to be oriented correctly to work as you want it pointing in the direction of movement so the washer can move freely.
Then we tried them out.  Luckily it was a beautiful day.  We always love another reason to get outside!
There were some train wrecks as everyone was so busy looking at their accelerometers that they weren't watching where they were going!
