Fire Prevention

We were so fortunate last week to have Wayne, Traci, and Merlene from the Tremont Fire Department come out to do an entire day of fire prevention with us. The kids were so excited, especially after hearing that we were going to get to test out our newly donated brush truck.
What is fire prevention without the great hats?
The firefighters came bearing treats of stickers, glow in the dark wrist bands, tattoos and pencils. So cool!
Johnny had his own ideas about the fire hat.
Chief Wayne talked to the kids about practicing exit strategies with their families as well as what to do in the event of an actual fire at their house.
THEN the super cool gear came out. Or should I say super HOT gear since it's so well-insulated that the firefighters were sweating just putting it on?
Chief Wayne got on his oxygen tank to show the kids what a firefighter would look like if they came in to rescue them, as the sound of the breathing is a little scary and some children hide from firefighters that are trying to save them.
They even got out their infrared camera to show how they find people and pets within a smoke-filled building, as well as to tell where the hottest spots of a fire are located.
The kids got to see some of the fires and accidents that the Tremont Fire Department responded to and some of the controlled burns that they have done.
Here Wayne is showing Dylan how low he would have to get to the ground to stay below the smoke line in a room.
Then it was outdoors for some experimenting with our donated gear.
That backpack full of water is really heavy!

As you can imagine, the temptation was too great to resist squirting each other. Luckily it was a really nice day as everyone was soaked!
Chief Wayne taught us all how to use a fire extinguisher.
Lastly it was down to the fire pond to experiment with our new brush truck that we got from Orland.
And who was driving it down to the water? Mr. Finn.
Everyone even got to play around with the hoses, but of course my camera died. Probably a good thing since I took about fifty photos as it was! But a great day was had by all. Thanks so much to everyone who was a part of this event: Becky, Mike and Jessica, and especially to Chief Wayne, Traci and Merlene...you guys rock!
